Watu
People · Identity layer for the unseen economy
Watu makes informal workers visible as legitimate economic actors with verifiable identity, history, and reputation that they control — without surveillance.
01 · What it does
Identity as common infrastructure — not a product moat.
Watu is the foundational identity rail that every other Jabali product builds on. It enables informal workers — creators, traders, health workers, micro-merchants — to accumulate verifiable identity, history, and reputation that they control.
The pattern across the Global Majority's informal economy is the same: people who generate enormous economic value are invisible to the systems that allocate capital, services, and rights. Watu is the infrastructure that makes them visible — on their own terms.
Watu makes MSME Studio's data flywheel and Studio Mtaani's creator rail possible. Without Watu, both are partial answers to their own questions.
02 · Design principles
Four principles that hold the design.
01
Participant-controlled
The identity record belongs to the participant. It is not created for surveillance, compliance, or extraction. The participant decides what to share, with whom, and when.
02
Accumulative
Identity is not a one-time registration event. It grows richer with every transaction, every verified interaction, every data point the participant contributes. Two years of active use creates a richer record than most formal-sector businesses hold.
03
Legibility without surveillance
Making informal workers legible to capital and services does not require making them legible to surveillance systems. Watu is designed to hold the difference.
04
Open infrastructure
Every Jabali sub-studio uses Watu. And Watu is more valuable because every sub-studio uses it. Identity as common infrastructure, not as a product moat.
03 · Portfolio connections
Every Jabali product is built on Watu identity.
Studio Mtaani
Creator identity — every artist and studio session ties to a Watu identity record, enabling verifiable splits, copyright claims, and royalty attribution.
MSME Studio
Trader identity — every Handshake contract and Haki dispute is anchored to a Watu identity, making the financial record portable and verifiable across institutions.
NGAO-CHW
Health worker identity — community health workers in the NGAO extension are enrolled via Watu, enabling verified service attribution and value flows.
BoxCommerce
Merchant identity — jua kali and mama mboga traders on the marketplace surface hold Watu-backed identities, enabling trust and transaction at scale.
04 · Strategic position
Foundational, not flagship. Earns its place through network effect.
Watu is not the most commercially visible product in the Jabali portfolio. It earns its place less through its own commercial signal than through the network effect it creates across every sub-studio.
The right framing is "identity as common infrastructure." Every Jabali sub-studio uses Watu, and Watu becomes more valuable because every sub-studio uses it. This is the compounding logic that makes the studio-of-studios model defensible at scale.
Current counterparty: Kenya Red Cross Society. Watu is being developed in collaboration with KRCS, with scope to migrate fully into the Jabali portfolio as the studio matures.
